At Berkeley Lab, we are dedicated to fostering a thriving community where everyone can collaborate in a safe, respectful, and supportive work environment—an atmosphere free of discrimination, harassment, exploitation, or intimidation. Several offices at the Lab are dedicated to building and maintaining this culture, which aligns with our Stewardship principles. The Office for Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD) is essential in nurturing an organizational environment that prioritizes employee well-being and safety. OPHD oversees compliance with policies that prohibit discrimination and harassment based on protected categories. This oversight involves responding to and resolving employee reports of harassment and discrimination and monitoring adherence to civil rights policies. By monitoring compliance with nondiscrimination laws and policies and implementing effective complaint resolution processes, OPHD promotes a culture of accountability and trust.
OPHD is also responsible for oversight of Berkeley Lab’s Whistleblower and Workplace Violence Prevention policies.
OPHD’s mission is to help prevent and eliminate discriminatory and harassing behavior through providing real-time support and advice and counseling, conducting impartial investigations and providing Lab-wide education. We take professional work environment concerns seriously, and have a variety of ways to take action. Safe and fair responses to concerns are at the heart of ensuring a welcoming professional environment for all.
Please note that not all concerns reported to OPHD fall within its jurisdiction. If you are unsure that your concern falls within OPHD's jurisdiction or you wish to resolve it through other conflict resolution, we encourage you to contact your supervisor and HR Division Partner first. You also have the right to report your concerns directly to OPHD and we may conduct an intake to ensure that your concerns are being heard and routed to the appropriate department, in accordance with the appropriate Berkeley Lab policies.
Accommodations and/or language services are available to participate in OPHD complaint resolution processes. Anyone needing disability accommodations, interpretation services or assistance in order to make a report or participate in any of our complaint resolution processes may request assistance by contacting us directly.
